Everyone’s teeth darken with age. Part of it is staining from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking. Part of it happens inside the tooth, as the inner layer yellows and the enamel over it wears thinner. A knock to a tooth, an old root filling or certain medicines can also darken individual teeth.
Brushing and hygiene visits remove surface stain, but they can’t change the colour from within. That’s what whitening does.
We use Opalescence home whitening, a well-established system designed to keep sensitivity low. First we check your teeth and gums, as whitening isn’t suitable for everyone and any decay or gum problems need treating first. Then we take a digital scan and make trays that fit your teeth closely.
At home, you wear the trays with a small amount of gel for a few hours a day or overnight, usually for two to three weeks, until you reach a shade you’re happy with. Some people notice mild sensitivity for a day or two. The kit, including trays, is £395, and you can keep the trays for occasional top-ups.
Whitening only changes natural teeth. Crowns, veneers and fillings stay the same colour, so if you have any at the front, we’ll talk about that before you start.
