What counts as a dental emergency?

If you're not sure, call us. It's always better to check than to wait for a small problem to become a bigger one.

Severe toothache

Throbbing pain that keeps you awake or isn't controlled by painkillers is often a sign of infection or an inflamed nerve.

Swelling or abscess

A swollen face or gum, a gum boil, or a bad taste can mean an infection that needs treating promptly.

Knocked-out adult tooth

Time matters. See the first-aid steps below and call us straight away. The sooner it's seen, the better the chance of saving it.

Broken or chipped tooth

From a small chip to a tooth that has split, especially if it's sharp, sensitive or painful.

Lost filling or crown

Keep the crown if you have it. We can often re-cement it or protect the tooth until it can be properly repaired.

Wisdom tooth pain

Painful, swollen gum around a wisdom tooth (pericoronitis) is very common. Find out more about wisdom teeth removal.

Bleeding after an extraction

Bleeding that won't settle after a tooth has been taken out, even with firm pressure.

Injury to the mouth

Knocks from sport or falls that damage teeth, lips or gums, in adults or children.

Broken dentures, braces or veneers

A loose veneer, a broken brace wire or a cracked denture that's stopping you eating or speaking comfortably.

Go to A&E or call 999 if you have:
  • swelling spreading to your eye or neck, or that affects your breathing or swallowing
  • bleeding from your mouth that you can't stop with firm pressure
  • a serious injury to your face or jaw

What to do before you reach us

Simple first aid that can ease pain and make treatment more successful.

Knocked-out adult tooth

Pick it up by the crown (the white part), not the root. If it's dirty, rinse it briefly in milk. If you can, push it gently back into its socket and bite on a clean cloth. If not, keep it in milk or inside your cheek and come straight in. Don't put a baby tooth back in.

Toothache

Take paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed on the packet, if they're suitable for you. Don't put aspirin on the gum, as it can burn. Avoid very hot, cold or sugary food and drinks.

Broken tooth or lost crown

Rinse your mouth with warm water and keep any pieces. A cold compress on your cheek helps with swelling. Never use household glue to stick a crown back on. A temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can help until you see us.

Bleeding after an extraction

Roll up some clean gauze or a cotton handkerchief, place it over the socket and bite down firmly for 20 minutes without checking. Sit upright and avoid rinsing. If it doesn't stop, call us.

Our first job is to get you out of pain. We'll examine the tooth, take an X-ray if needed, and explain what's going on and your options before we do anything. If you're anxious, tell us. We'll go at your pace, and for very nervous patients we offer IV sedation.
