Your hygiene appointment

Regular visits to our hygiene team are one of the best things you can do for your mouth. Gum disease is the most common reason adults lose teeth, and it often causes no pain until it’s well advanced. A hygiene appointment catches problems early and keeps your teeth, gums, fillings, crowns and implants healthy for longer.

At each visit we will:

  • check your gums and measure any pockets around your teeth, so we can spot gum disease early and track it over time
  • gently remove plaque, tartar and staining, including from places your toothbrush can’t reach
  • polish your teeth so they feel smooth and look brighter
  • show you the brushing and cleaning-between technique that suits your mouth, and which interdental brush sizes to use

Most people benefit from a visit every three to six months. If you have gum disease or implants, we’ll recommend what’s right for you. If your gums need more than a routine clean, we’ll talk you through periodontal treatment.

Fees: a 30-minute hygiene appointment is £79, or £103 with air polishing. A 45-minute appointment is £114, or £138 with air polishing. See all our fees.

Gentler cleaning with the NSK Varios Combi Pro2

We’ve invested in the NSK Varios Combi Pro2, a hygiene system that combines ultrasonic scaling and air polishing in one unit. For you, that means a more thorough clean that most patients find noticeably more comfortable.

  • Warmed water. Cold water is what makes many people wince during a clean, especially with sensitive teeth. The Varios Combi Pro2 warms the water used for both scaling and polishing, so the whole appointment is more comfortable.
  • Gentle ultrasonic scaling. Instead of lots of scraping, fine vibrations loosen tartar so it can be rinsed away. Your hygienist can fine-tune the power to suit your teeth and gums.
  • Air polishing for stains and plaque. A fine stream of water, air and a very fine, low-abrasive powder lifts away coffee, tea and wine stains and the sticky film of bacteria from between teeth, around braces and aligner attachments, and around crowns and implants.
  • Cleaning below the gumline. Where it’s needed, we can use an extra-fine powder and a special nozzle to clean inside gum pockets and around implants, which helps when treating and maintaining gum health.
  • A clearer view. Slim handpieces with built-in LED lights help your hygienist see and reach the back teeth easily, so nothing gets missed.

If you have sensitive teeth or you’ve found cleans uncomfortable in the past, let us know when you book. We’ll go at your pace and stop whenever you need a break.
