What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment is designed to treat teeth that have become infected, as well as preventing the onset of further infections.
The treatment involves removing infected or damaged tissue from inside of the tooth. After the infected tissue is removed, the remaining space is cleaned, filled and sealed.
Finally, the tooth is restored with a crown or filling so that the tooth can continue to function like a normal tooth.
When is root canal treatment indicated?
Tooth tissue can become inflamed when damaged by bacterial infection. Most commonly this is a result of untreated dental decay, but can also be a result of other reasons such as fractures in teeth. If left untreated the tooth tissue will die and this bacterial spread can lead to infection, pain and swelling.
Once this occurs, there are only two ways to resolve it. Either, extraction of the tooth or root canal treatment. Root treatment therefore serves to save a tooth that would otherwise have to be extracted.
Is root canal treatment painful?
Modern root treatment is very similar to having a routine filling and usually can be completed in one or two appointments.
Root treatment is usually very successful. However, if the infection comes back the treatment can be repeated.
